Ever since we obtained our 2013 3.0T Prestige (May 2016), we have been hearing a rattle noise when the engine is started. It lasts maybe 5 seconds after starting and then goes away. Just wanted to find out if this is normal.

it's probably a chain tensioner. I had this issue on my old touareg, granted it had the 4.2. Never did anything about it, wasn't worth it as i was way out of warranty.

Planning on taking it to the dealer at the next service interval (Q is warrantied to 120K miles) - I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this or if it was normal.

I have a similar situation with my 2012. I've got about 78K miles now on mine.

I noticed mine about 5K miles before the factory warranty expired. I asked my dealership service department about it, and they said it was likely bleed down in some part of the oil system, I'm having a hard time remembering now what they said. Maybe it was bleed down in something that feeds the hydraulic lifters?

Anyway, on mine, the noise sounds EXACTLY like the first start after an oil change. You know, when the oil pump is dry and is sucking fresh oil up for the first time as it's the first start after the drain and refill. That said, mine sounds like that, BUT NOT AS LONG. My noise lasts about 2 seconds whereas the same/similar noise on a fresh oil change lasts about 5 seconds or so.

Also, I get the noise on a cold start, almost daily now. And if I don't drive for several days, say over a weekend, it is really noticeable.

My truck is way out of warranty now, but I have a great foreign auto shop here where I live that I'm taking it now these days. I think it's time on mine to take it to them, leave it over night, and then show them the next morning what mine sounds like and get a professional opinion. Might be an oil pump or something in the oil system that's pending a failure.

Anyway, my situation. Might try and take some audio or a quick video and post too.

Would really be nice to hear of videos of the noises...
Especially if it gets fixed, then users here can hear the noise and the description and know better what the noise actually is.
I have a noise at cold starts, posted a video.
To me its sounds more like the EGR is engaging and off after around 20seconds.
I don't believe if does it if it sits out in the hot sun, which tends to say EGR rather than oil.
mine comes from the passenger side back top area where the throttle body is.

OK, I'll get a video of it before I take it in for its 55K mile service and will follow up with the dealer's diagnosis.

please let us know what you find, My 2013 just started doing the same thing. noise for 2 seconds like after you do an oil change. I checked my oil and it was down about a half a quart. but I don't think that was the problem.. I'll see if I can make video of it also...
