3.0T Engine Rattle at startup - normal?
#12
I've been able to take a few video's of mine.
There is a 10 second clip where the noise is NOT present. That is file named IMG_0150.mov.
There is a 12 second clip from another day where the noise IS present. That is file named IMG_0155.mov.
Again, mine is about 2 seconds of what is similar to the oil system recharging itself after an oil change. But, it's random as to when I get it, although it is more regular for me, it's still not with every start.
Hope the clips help someone. I've not yet taken mine to my local foreign auto shop, but I probably need to.
Thanks,
Jesse

Mine does it too. There is a TSB on it and it is covered under warranty if your car is still under warranty, if not, it says you are screwed. Seriously, it says noise will not lead to damage but they will install l" optimized idler tensioners"

Do you have the TSB info you could attach or post? Our 2013 Sline does this but we got denial of existence a TSB from our dealer and a "this is normal"...

My 2014 has that issue as well if it is cold and I haven't started it up in a day or two. It lasts a couple of seconds only and doesn't do it again through the day when i start it again.
My question is will this do any harm to the engine if it is not taken care of? And will it get more pronounced?
And what exactly is happening that causes this? Lack of oil there for a second or two?
Thanks for the TSB. I'll keep it handy next time the Q goes in for service.

Had that rattle previously until one day the car wouldn't stay running after returning from a 2+ week vacation. Had it towed to the shop and it turned out that the cam tensioner was in pieces in one of the banks. Had it remediated and all was good until yesterday when I thought I heard it for a second when I started it up in the morning to go to work. But when I left work yesterday, the rattle persisted for a good 5 minutes before I drove off. It seemed to have went away while driving home (5 miles). I'll be bringing back to the shop again today hopefully.
