Default Coolant Loss Advice - 2008 4.2 TDI S Line

Hi all

Had my 2008 4.2 TDI S Line for about 2 months and had to get a bottle of coolant a couple of weeks ago because the check light came on each time i started the engine. I added a 1.5L bottle plus about 0.5L of water which put it to the max on the filler neck but my light came back on today, after about 200 miles of driving.

I dont appear to have any drips under the car after being parked up, anyone any ideas please? Is it evaporating rather than leaking or will an engine cover be hiding the drips perhaps?

Thanks

Carl

Thats a lot of fluid to loose. It could be pooling in the skid plate under the engine bay. I would look to see if you can see any residue, usually coolant leaves a redish color where it is leaking from. I would also get it to a shop and have it inspected. GL.

Only time I've heard of losing that much coolant without dripping anything on the floor was a leaking head gasket which allows coolant to leak into the engine oil. Would explain why the previous owner sold it (as in he knew it was about to go) . No idea if that applies here, but yeah you'll definitely want to get it looked at by a professional.

Hi I'm not certain but doubt its the head gasket because it was serviced he day I got it by a third party dealer that sell $300k Lamborghinis', Ferraris etc. and I don't have white sludge under the oil cap?

I'm going to keep an eye on it again and if it loses it that rapidly in a week or so will deffo get it checked out?

Thanks for the help guys.

Carlos, I used to have a C5 4.2 allroad. And I would loose coolant from one of the two small rads on each side. Check all the radiators on your truck once you bring it up to a normal operating temperature, or bring it to a garage to do a leakdown test with a pressure cap.

Do you mean intercoolers or does it have radiators left and right?

Good to hear it's not the head gasket Carl. Was just throwin' it out there as a worst-case possibility. Will be interested to hear what you find out. Good luck!

Carlos I don't know, on the allroad they added 2 rads on the 4.2 gas to fill the hole of the intercoolers on the 2.7 . Obviously an intercooler doesnt have any coolant, have you looked at the hoses going to the heater?

4.2 allroad would not have charge air coolers, unless someone put a couple induction forcers on it.

Cuatrokoop, I am not talking intercoolers, there is two small radiators on each side of the bumoer on the 4.2 allroad NA spec.
