Default EGR valve failure on the 3.0 TDI - Who's had it?

My 3.0 TDi with 55k miles just had the EGR valve (and/or valve motor) fail - dealer replaced under warranty. My wife was on a road trip in the mountains when the car effectively went into limp mode (no power when accelerating) and the MIL illuminated. She was able to pull it into an open lot and call for help.

I've searched a bit and found a few others that seemed to have this same issue, but not a centralized thread. Just wondering how common a failure this really is for the 3.0 TDi? Who's had theirs replaced?

The really crappy part is that the vehicle shuts down. I know that the EGR is more important than most emissions components, but I'd rather get my vehicle home on its own power running sub-optimally with a CEL than have to park it and ruin the weekend.
