That 390mi shows how many miles you can drive the car before you need to fill it again. Read your manual.

A 2nd to that Dutch commented, and in my experience if you haven't reset your trip computer and have been getting on the throttle a lot or doing a lot of city driving such that your current stored average MPG value is lower, it is estimating how many miles you can drive at your most recent consumption habits.

If you saw 550, it may have been after the dealer or previous owner had just filled it up and had also just reset the trip computer.

As a little experiment, you can fill up your tank, cruise slowly on a freeway or 45 mph boulevard, and reset your long term and short term trip computer values. You should be able to get to 23 or 24 mpg average within a minute or so of cruising at a lower speed (assuming you don't hit lights or traffic) and then look at your estimated driving range. It should be a fair bit higher, if not back around 550.
