What causes a key not found error?
Here we go again. I've had a few of these things. '05 Touareg, '06 Cayenne, '07 Q7, '12 Touareg and now with the '12 Touareg being bought back the wife wants another first gen Q7. Doesn't like the new one. Has no rational for decisions so it comes down to the one metric of "it's just what I like."
Okay.
So, I found an '14 S-Line but when I drove it the key not found error never turned off. Granted, the battery was almost dead and it just barely got the engine turned over when I started it and I know that can do weird things. Dealer says "it's probably just a key fob battery" but I have owned enough of these things to know that is probably not the case.
Any insight

its probably just a key fob battery, aka Occam's Razor.. I've had enough Keyless vehicles to know they consume fob batteries much quicker than non-keyless fobs.
Dealer should resolve it before you buy it, let them figure it out.. if it needs a new starter battery or fob battery thats not something you should be diagnosing pre-sale.

Does the key work with the car for keyless entry and starting?
If so, I would suggest it just needs a new battery in the key fob.
As always, don't buy it until it's all good and fixed and make sure they supply at least two keys that both work!
