Default My Start Button Bit Me!

Cleaned the interior of my Q yesterday, and when I went to start it I pulled my finger back in pain—something pricked me. Whatever it was, it was enough to draw blood.

Put reading glasses on and took a close look at the start button. One of the triangle pieces that make up the “N” was bent upward, and that’s what poked me. I had to remove it and the other, which was also bent upward, as it was not possible to simply press it back down. I also noticed the center piece of the “A” was missing too.

Here’s a photo of my start button:

And what it should look like:

I also found the same problem noted in a recent Car and Driver long term Q7 update article:

Wonder if I should request that my service department replace it?

It's a known problem...dealer should replace.

I thought the new metal start buttons looked cool compared to my old black plastic one, but I guess I have an advantage as this couldn't happen to mine. I did have issues with the MMI control dial peeling in the center(replaced under warranty with a newer version - which I noticed doesn't have the soft touch finish). This should be replaced no questions asked. It is obviously a common defect. Audi should issue a TSB and replace them with an upgraded version. Making owners fingers bleed is not a good PR tactic IMO.

Did you have the button checked for rabies or any other blood born pathogens? LOL. Dealer should definitely replace button.

Stopped by the dealership today and showed them the button. They made an appointment for me this Wednesday so the service manager and warranty expert could get together and look at it. Since the Q is more than 1 year old (by 14 days), they said it might not be covered since 12/12 applies to this type of item.

Time to possibly prepare for battle.....

Pathetic. There is such variation in the warranty. Show me where it says the 4yr/50k warranty doesn't cover trim(it is supposedly bumper to bumper). I had a seat bottom replaced due to cracking leather just before the 4yr warranty ran out.

Good news.

Arrived at the dealer and before I could even open my mouth, my Audi service adviser Dave said "we'll order you a new button right away".

I also told him how I read here that some folks cover the button with screen protector film, and he said he would have his clear bra installer cover the button during install.

Bad news.

About 5 minutes after I left the dealer my MMI locked up. The center **** and 4 buttons do not respond at all. The buttons on either side of the ****, and the 3 at the bottom, still work. I turned the vehicle off then back on twice while stopped at an intersection--did not correct the problem.

Since it will take 3-4 days for the new start button to arrive I'll stop and see Dave after work tomorrow in case they have to order something for the MMI.
