My 2002 A6 4.2 has done this since about 10k miles. Now has around 90k with no problems. I noted it at every service for the record but have had no issues. I agree that it sounds really bad.

Absolutely everyone will make this sound if not already doing so, sorry for a late reply was just browsing the forum. I have a 2011 Q7 3.0 Supercharged and has made the sound since 10k. I also have a 2010 Stage 2+ S4 same sound, multiple friends of mine also have S4's and there's do it as well. Granted the S4's oil delivery is better so I only hear it from time to time and if the cars been parked for a few days.. Hope it helps mate

Sounds like an electronic cutoff switch is in order.

Mini Coopers have this same issue. Its the timing chain tensioner / guides. Not sure about the Audis, but in the Minis its very sensitive to oil level. If its at all low it gets worse. As long as it goes away quickly after engine start its normal.

3.6, 4.2 and at the end of 2008 TDI was available in 2009+ models.

My 3.6 rattles at start-up. It's oil related, lasts a few seconds while pressure builds. It's either a lifter or two or the oil-pressure operated tensioner. On my '98 A6 (112k miles) I just had to replace the driver side cam chain tensioner and three intake lifters on #4 cylinder.

Hi I am new this. I have 2010 Sline with same problem. It has just gone into Audi Service today. I will let you know what they tell me.
I am a mechanic myself, but have never touched one of these.

Andrew

Just been told by Audi Service, 99% sure that it is the Timing chain tensioner that is the problem. $9k to fix.......

Evidently the engine has to come out? Seems quite unreasonable, parts are probably only a few hundred dollars.

Even if parts were $1k, that would mean they need to spend 80hrs doing the work at a rate of $100/hr. Did they give you an estimate with the break-down?
