Q7 Tire recommendation 295/35 21
#61
is the ride any softer when going from 295/35/21 to 295/40/21?
id like it a little bit more coseting, even thou i have air suspension and drive in comfort, id also like the extra sidewall to give the alloy a bit more forgiveness near the kerbs

We are due for tires in the next couple of months and just can't decide yet which way to go...go back with 295/35 in a different tire than the OEM's (between the Conti DWS06, Nokian Zline, Vred Ultracs or Hankook Ventus) or go with a 295/40 (either the Conti DWS06 or another set of Conti UHP's).
I can say for sure the 295/40, even though they are only about 1" larger in diameter is a huge visual difference. ...the visual difference between the two is huge...the 40's really fill up the wheel well and look beefy.

i replaced OEM Dunlops (still pictured) only after 3K miles due to changing weather and got Conti DWS06 in stock size. much quieter ride (can keep radio volume around 3 to 5)! handles well (and i drive pretty aggressively on Dynamic all the time, too). i didn't know they came in a 40 aspect ratio. definitely like the space-filling effect. it's a consideration come replacement time, but i had quality issues when getting the replacement tires initially; 3 out of 4 were defective (out of round). then a few weeks later, got a flat in one due to road debris. its replacement was also defective. after all that got sorted out, was very pleased!

We thought the ride was softer and less harsh when we went from 295/35 to 295/40. But we also went from the OEM Dunlops in 295/35 to Conti UHP's in 295/40...so the ride difference may have been due to actual tire construction as much as taller sidewall. We did lose power with the 40's, Q feels slower and it doesn't handle or corner nearly as well...trade off I guess for the better ride quality. We have the standard suspension, no air suspension.

I've got a 2011 Q7 S-Line.
Purchased it with a brand new set of Pirelli P-Zero 295/35/21 tires that needed to be replaced after 12,000 miles (about 11 months).
In the summer, I purchased a set of 19" rims and put on a set of Blizzak snow tires for the winter. Worked great!
In the spring, I had to purchase a set of of Yokohama tires. Those tires weren't great and needed to be replaced by November.
So now, the 19's are back on and I'm thinking about purchasing a set of 20" rims and Pirelli Verde All Season Plus or the Conti DWS06 275/45/20's. The price for these are much cheaper than mostly any of the 21's. And I can't see replacing a set of 21's each year.
Will I be disappointed going from 21's down to 20's? I'm just tired of spending lots of money on 21" tires each year. Thanks.

Recently purchased 2012 Q7 TDI Prestige S Line with 9k miles. Drove car approximately 3k in first week and loved everything except tire noise. The car currently has Dunlops and the rears are gone while the fronts have approximately 30% of tread remaining. The noise level is very, very high.
Three questions:
1) I am told that you MUST replace all 4 tires at same time due to potential problems with differential. Is this true?
2) Several people have recommended the Conti's.
The car is my wife's toy and does not get on a track. Priorities are safety, quiet and lifespan. I welcome any recommendations.
3) Is the tire life expectancy on this vehicle going to be 12k?
Thanks in advance,
FL
