space saver spares.....
Are kind of ok....unless you are in Cleetusville Oregon on a Saturday and you just did this to your wheel...
The local tire store tried to help but when the conversation starts out with "who makes owdeees are it a cheby or a ford" you give up, find a rental car and drive several hundred miles back to your house load up your spare wheels/tires drive several hundred miles back and then go home.
How far REALISTICALLY could you drive on a space saver and get away with it. At least I dodged the hole with my right front wheel so I only lost 1!

Bummer - a wheel repair shop could probably bend the wheel back into shape. Or you might find a spare OEM wheel for sale on local Craigslist.
As far as the space saver tires go, not sure - but as long as you closely match the rolling diameter of the other tires it won't stress the differential too much. The rule is

less than 50 MPH and no more than 70 miles. Many have broken this rule, I'm sure. A quick search reveals no damaged Q7 differentials from running different size spares. Good luck - let us know what happened...

no issues....
I was posting from home after the trip. New wheel on order, they are not the stock wheel so luckily tirerack still had a few although they are on closeout. My next issue is to get it to the dealer and have them check over the RR suspension etc. just to make sure nothing is tweaked. The drive home was totally normal and UN-eventful so hopefully my turn in the "barrel" is winding down...at least I surely do hope so!

Here's one way I proactively get around the compact and/or inflatable spare on long trips. The attached photo was taken on the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, Canada on a trip from Atlanta to Alaska and back. No way I would want to have to drive a compact or inflatable spare for any distance (and they are long and far between service stations on that trip) with that rig.

DUTCH - I will be doing this from now on with long trips - your trip was an inspiration!
flynavy - how fast did you push the spare and how many miles back home? Glad to hear you made it back OK.

never went over 40
limped in to Medford airport, rented a car drove home and back with my spare wheels and Yokohama tires. (+ floor jack, torque wrench....etc) and changed both rears back to stock wheels. Sizes are the same on both the old and new wheels, but I didn't want to take the chance of miss-matched rolling diameters on one axle. Fronts were different but I did not think it would overly affect the quattro system as it is biased as far as output goes between the front and rear. No issues at all going home and it seems to be fine so far (except for the visual wheel miss-match!) New matching wheel comes today then I will get it mounted and put the two wheels that match back on.
