Default Sunroof leak on 2008?

Last July we took our 2007 Q7 into the dealer for the MMI not working. Turned out to be the dreaded leaky sunroof problem that shorted out the power amp.
We paid the ungodly amount of money to have it fixed and was told this was a 07 Q7 problem by the Service Manager and it was corrected for the later models.

Fast forward to our 2008 Q7 S-Line that replaced our 07 Q7 with and Wednesday nights heavy downpour and all day rain on Thursday. My wife got into the car after work yesterday and the MMI is acting just like it did back in July. MMI screen came on for about 2 seconds, then all went blank.

Was the leaky sunroof only an 07 issue or is this an issue on the 08's as well. Maybe another issue on our 08?
Am I going to have to pay the >$4000 again for the SAME issue?

there were several revisions in the roof but most of the issues came from the drains... pinched drains or airbags crushed them or the connection at the sunroof broke. this was an issue on ALL 2007-2009 and my 2007 had three roofs and finally on the third roof was the problem corrected. the best part was it was covered under warranty (unfortunately not in your case) and received new floor mats and an entirely brand new interior carpet. the car was in the shop for over a week and they gutted it completely removed the roof and floor carpets etc. it was awesome. supposedly 2010+ has the new revised roofs and drains and it shouldn't be a problem.

Dealing with this problem right now with my '09 CPO that I bought in January from Town Audi in NJ. Water drips inside on the passenger side between the glove box and door...heavy dripping. Happening on driver side too, but not as much. All of this happens obviously during rain storms as well as a basic car wash. Very annoying.

Good news is my local dealer is replacing sunroof drains on Monday with the "updated" drains. They knew right away what the problem was when I mentioned it. Said the "update" was that Audi made the drain tubes fatter so crap wouldn't get lodged in there.

I would assume they will also replace the carpet. I'll make sure that happens.

Wow-- Sorry for your pain. Our 2011 supposedly has the revisions but I may still get one of these and place in the well with the amplifier.

Is the amplifier something that I could replace myself?

this is where re-installation is key, some have the airbag lean against the tub squeezing them and making them narrow and bottleneck so despite being thicker they still dont have the passage cleared to empty properly.

also i imagine the entire time the car was on the lot water went in, not sure why they wouldnt just have this resolved before the customer takes delivery knowing the issue exists and is effective that particular car... nope. they wait for you to buy it then after a few weeks of ownership you get a pleasant surprise after your first car wash or rain storm.

easier method is to buy a cheap container of windshield washer fluid and pour it all over the roof and the sunroof track. if see blue water pour onto the floor you're good if you see it accumulate by the spare tire or anywhere but outside the car on the floor you have a leak.

Where can I get a good price on the Fiber Optic Loop (bridge connector) to test the components?

Thanks

just buy a vagcom and scan the car or test each component individually that you think may be damaged.

Update on the Amp.

Friday evening, my wife and I went to go out for dinner and the MMI powered up and has been acting fine ever since. Not sure how/why it would have stopped, then all of sudden started working again.

I watched the video on how to replace the amp and it didn't look to difficult, so I decided I would tear into it on Saturday morning and see if I could find any leaks/problems.

Took about 30 minutes to actually get to the amp, then another 30 minutes or so to put everything back (not sure how the dealer can charge 5 hours for this job?).

But anyway, the amp is the highest mounted piece of hardware back there and its a good 4-5 inches away from the drain tube. I dont really understand how this is the first component that is affected by the drainage problem?

I saw no evidence of a water leak, so I'm not sure what would have caused the system to stop working for a day or so.
I even had my wife run the hose over the car while I was inside for a good 10 minutes and nothing was out of the ordinary.

So its working, for now, but if I ever need to replace the amp, I will be doing this myself.
Here are a few pictures I took after I had everything apart.
