Exactly. One swift kick, pause, and it will work every time (this is from experience with my BMW, not a Q7)

Yes, it's the same on the Q7. Works every time for me. Had a couple of issues when I first got it which were down to me not being patient and kicking a second time. I think the delay from kick to open is about 2 seconds.

Thanks everyone. I will certainly give it a shot and follow the instructions you all provided.

Mine has been very erratic. Hasn't worked for 2 weeks. Took the car to the car wash, and now it is working great. I bet anything that the reason it wasn't working was due to a dirty sensor. These Minnesota winters will do that.

The best way to operate the tailgate, IMHO, is to gently wave your foot under the valance from left to right or visa versa and wait 2 seconds. I found that kicking in and out was less effective.

I sweep my foot under the center of the bumper and it works well.

I had trouble at first until I found the sensor is just to the left of the tow hitch. A quick kick in and out right there just left of the center of the back works nearly all the time for me. But a dirty sensor can also cause it to not work.

While my QZ is still nearly a month away, this thread is already very useful. My wife has a 2017 Acadia and has not been able to get the kick liftgate to work. The woman at the dealership said you had to wave your foot back and forth (side to side) under the bumper behind the driver rear tire, but said that it's finicky and doesn't work well. She only got it to work once when showing my wife.

Since it's not my car, I never looked at her manual, but heard her complaining about it a month or so ago. After reading this, I told her to grab her key fob and go to the garage and low and behold, it now works reliably 100% of the time when I showed her to use a straight kick/pull back motion.

Previously, I even watched her almost wind up on her butt one day as she was trying to wave her foot back and forth under the bumper, trying to get it deeper and deeper, thinking that was the problem. I had meant to dig into her manual, but never got around to it.

After trying the quick kick a few times this weekend, seems this was my problem, wasn't pulling away quickly enough. Now, however, I need to practice not shinning the bumper, or worse, the hitch, which doesn't feel very good at all...
