I ask because the "extended warranty" on my 2012 A4 Avant specifically says that it's NOT a warranty, but a "service agreement".

Just curious if these are actually warranties, or they're service agreements, but everybody just calls them a "warranty".
Service agreement is the correct term.

Here's some more pricing data points for those shopping for an extended factory warranty.

I have a 2013 Q5, factory warranty expires next month (12/16). Has 34k and change miles on it. I was originally quoted (the mileage is in addition to what's on the odometer, so since I'm at 34k, the 72k will take my warranty to 6 years and 106k miles):

$100 deductible:
3yr/36k - $3121
4yr/48k - $3593
5yr/60k - $4099
6yr/60k - $4358
6yr/72k - $4670

$250 deductible:
3yr/36k - $2772
4yr/48k - $3248
5yr/60k - $3654
6yr/60k - $3706
6yr/72k - $4044

I was only interested in the 6yr/72k so I called another dealer, told them they were my 4th quote and requested the price for the $100 and $250 deductible for the 6yr/72k.

Other deal came back with:
$100 deductible 6yr/72k - $4150
$250 deductible 6yr/72k - $3560

Took those numbers back to my preferred dealer and got these numbers:
$100 deductible 6yr/72k - $4020
$250 deductible 6yr/72k - $3494

I should have also noted that all of the above was for the Audi Pure Protection Platinum coverage (1:1 extension of the factory warranty).

Default GEICO extended warranty?

GEICO offers "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" that "Covers repairs to all mechanical parts like your engine, cooling and electrical, transmission, brakes, and air conditioning." for $92 / 6 months. So that's $184 / yr for 10 yrs = $1,840. A $250 deductible applies to each covered loss. It also provides daily coverage for expenses incurred due to rental of a substitute vehicle (up to $120 per mechanical breakdown or failure) and up to $40 for towing expenses incurred because of the mechanical breakdown or failure.

The Audi extended warranty description is more detailed, but I'm wondering about the practical differences and which is worth it. My 6 mo old 2017 Q7 was in the shop for a month, so I'm wondering about its long term reliability forecast.

This is my first Audi, so I'd welcome opinions / insights. Thanks.

The Fidelity warranty year/milage quotes are based on the "in service dates" of the vehicle (date first registered).
I think you have this wrong and would refer you to your service contract language. It states that the coverage period begins on the contract date (nothing to do with in service date) and lasts for the shorter of the term length bought or the mileage bought beginning with your current odometer reading.

Tomagoes is correct and he will get 6 additional years of coverage or 72,000 additional miles whichever occurs first.

Thank you, I stand corrected. So much talk prior on this subject with recent buyers, I was not processing the fact that Tomagoes Q5 post was a much later extended warranty purchase for a nearly expired factory warranty. For him/her the two would not run concurrently as it would with 2017 Q7 owners buying into a warranty now.

I do recall 5 or 6 years ago the Audi warranty was in fact total OD or years on vehicle life, but it changed at some point.

again, thanks for the correction, I will delete my post above as do not want to make a confusing topic any more confusing then it already is for everyone

Which is one reason why the warranty cost is significantly higher as the car gets older.

If I add the standard 4 year / 50 kmiles warranty ($0 cost) to Tomagoes's original quote ($100 deductible), and compare with fd-warranty price (also $100 deductible) , the total cost is actually similar. Am I missing anything?
