About to buy an RS6, Common problems around certain milages?
Hey guys, so I'm currently in the A4 world and have finally come to the conclusion that I have to move on to bigger and more powerful things. Anyways, I am currently looking at an RS6 with a little over 70k on the clock. Do you think this is prone to have problems at this mileage? as far as I know its been maintained properly and had all its check-ups, etc. Any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks

get an extended warranty
Whatever you do, make sure you get an extended warranty if it is not CPO. I believe fidility has been good to many. Mine is at 48,000 miles and I have a close to $18,000 (paid mostly by audi of course!!) done over the course of the last two years. 1) DRC failure 2)Torgue converter (expensive fix) 3)Brakes and rotors 4)set of tires twice (PS'2 run about 1600 a set)
And not to mention to speeding tickets because of my spirtied driving. Absolutely a fun car to drive, one of my favorites, but make sure that you have extra in your piggy bank when the time comes.

At 75k you will face major service which includes timing belt, figure about $2500. As to
problems, not sure that the car is any more or less prone at 70k than at 50k or 30k or 10k - at 12k my wiring harness had to be replaced; at 23k my DRC failed - was never competently repaired, so I went with aftermarket suspension; at 49k the torque converter needed replacement. Those were the biggies for my car thus far (53k).

Ask these guys about O2 sensors, torque converters, and DRC. I'd run away rather than walk. I
think the RS6 is a great car, but it's a costly/maintenance nightmare (even compared to my B5 ) I think you're going to be in for a rude awakening coming from a cheap to fix/maintain A4.

Thanks for the advice, well, its between either an RS6, or get a B5 S4 and go stage III... think going stage III on an S4 would be more reliable than an RS6?

It might not be more "reliable" per se but the car is pretty cheap to own out of warranty
compared to the RS6. I do all my own work on the S4. I changed my O2 sensors last month in about an hour. On the RS6 you either have to have the motor pulled or have the downpipes removed to even get to the O2 sensors. I guarantee parts on the S4 are cheaper too. I've heard the DRC is $$$$ on the RS6 to get fixed and some owners have had multiple leaks where the DRC suspension had to be repaired. I would say get an extended warranty but that wouldn't cover "maintenance" items like O2 sensors or timing belt (every 35K). Just get a B5 S4, switch out the K03s (the real weak point of the car), throw in K04s/fueling, and you'll love it.
