PSA - for any V8/V6 high mileage owners
I started this on the RS6 forum and am duplicating it on the other appropriate pages.
If you have a high mileage Audi V8 (2000 - 2012 or so) or V6, be ware of the Cam Chain Tensioner Wear.
You cannot see the bottom pad without removing the cam shafts and CCT assembly. The CEL will not light unless misfires happen, even if the phase angle is out of spec on Block 93. The spec is -6.0 to +6.0. The thing should trigger a CEL if out of this range but will not. Mine was -12 and +7 (left vs right side).
This is the appearance of the bad part...If it goes, your timing chain will brake and their goes the engine...
The plastic parts can be replaced for about $30 in parts for all four pads ($1,000,000 in labor) or the entire part for $700 to 800 each side. I have not found anyone who has used the aftermarket brand part which can run about $200.
Just FYI.
