I am ordering winter wheels and the distributor is suggesting that I need TPMS sensors. My question is simply: is that true? My understanding was that they weren't needed, but he says the RS7 is the one Audi that does in fact need them.

Yes, only the RS7 and R8 require actual TPMS sensors in the wheel. The rest use an indirect measurement method.

A8 doesn't have them and only the S8 Plus has them.

I wish it was an option for all of the cars. Would love to have them.

I agree. I had them on my D3 but none on the D4. We have some extreme temperature swings here and it was nice to be able to pull up the tire pressures on the MMI to decide if I need to air up the tires. Now I have to spend time doing it with a gauge.

Agree with the duke, it's excellent to be able to obtain direct pressure as well as temperature readings on the MMI!

Well there is one negative: More ugly wheel weights on the visable side of the wheels.
