Default 2005 S4 Gas Mileage? What does yours get?

My car seems to be drinking fuel. It also seems that it is geared really high. At 80 on the turnpike, in 6th my car is reving 3500rpm.

I have measured it twice now and the car gets 60miles from fuel to 3/4's of a tank. Is that about right?

Any suggestions.

Default Sounds about right...depending on your driving...

60 miles to 3/4 tank equates to about 240 miles per 16 gallon tank which is 15 mpg. If you do alot of stop and go driving or have a heavy foot, that sounds about right. On a long highway trip doing a steady 75-80 mph, my computer says 21+ mpg avg, but on my morning commute which is essentially all stop and go, it is not unusual for the computer to say 10+ mpg avg. The short answer is that the feds didn't collect $1700 gg tax because the S4 if fuel efficient. As for rpms, 3500 at 80 sounds about where I am. Remember the car is geared for performance, so just beacuse its a V8 with 6 gears doesn't mean it will rev like the 1977 Fleetwood my greanfather used to drive.

Default Actually, getting 60 miles to the 3/4 mark means nothing.

Studies have shown that the gas gauges are not acurate. By that I mean that at the 3/4 mark, you don't necesarily have 3/4 of a tank left. Maybe less maybe more. Also how can you tell if you are EXACTLY on the 3/4 mark or any mark other for that matter. What you can do though is to determine the mileage you have put on between fillups and calculate the MPGs. The computer in the car is close but also not acurate. BTW, you should probably be getting 14-16 mpg in city with 20-22 mpg on the highway' based on driving conditions and speed. Don't expect any more. In fact, most on this forum have a lead foot which will decrease MPGs significantly. Also, in the real world the MPGs for Tip and 6 MT are about the same.

Mine was running 14-ish around town, under generally lead-footed driving

I get about 10 MPG. I run it hard in Chicago. Mostly city driving; very little highway. The car has a 6 speed automatic. What a great car; milage be damned!

You'll learn not to ask this question, eventually. Just fill-up, and go back to grinning.

Default automatic vs. manual...

I have an automatic.
doing 80 in 6th gear: 2500 rpms (not 3500)
and just for kicks I shifted to 5th (with my left hand paddle) and it kicked up to 3100 rpms.

Seems to me that they have these gears set differently...

maybe that's why I'm able to get 25 mpg on the hwy. (not like I'm driving my wife's Civic, but still better than 18 mpg)
