...Help!...My engine fan won't stop!! The car has been off ...

In what sense? Radio programming? Memory seats maybe?
I don't know, I understand that you don't want to lose those, but I'd hate knowing something was running on the car for so damn long until the battery drained.

Long shot...
Can you see a wiring harness for that fan? If you can trace it, there should be a connector within easy reach that you can disconnect.
On the B5's there is a gaggle of wiring harnesses near the PS fluid reservoir. The whole lot of them needs to be disconnected when removing the lock carrier (which is usually removed with the fan attached). One of those must be for the fan. Check to see if you can find a similar bundle of connectors (about 6+ of them). Pull 'em apart one at a time until you hit pay dirt (they are a PITA to pull apart).

My relay went up in smoke...
Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago at 8,600 miles. I keep my battery on a maintainer, so when the fan started up on it's own after I got home after 9:00 p.m., it didn't completely kill the battery.
I did start the car and bring it up to operating temperature, thinking that might solve the problem. It didn't.
I pulled all of the fuses in succession, starting with #4, and was not able to get the fan to stop.
Disconnected the battery, recharged the battery, and called the dealer when they opened. They told me to drive it in and that they'd take me right away.
Hooked the battery back up, pulled it out of the garage, was entering the radio code, and had the entire relay go up in smoke. It took some of the wiring with it. Was able to unhook the battery before I had real problems and then flatbedded it to the dealer.
Took a full week as they did not have a relay in stock and then found that another one was involved and had to order that part too.
The relay is located in front of the air conditioning condenser, and is visible through the lower grill. It has two connectors coming out of a rectangular box.
Was told that they had not seen a lot of these, but it was not an unusual problem. The only thing that was uncharacteristic was that they usually see these in the Summer, not December in New England.

We have the same problem with the misses B6 S4.
Replaced Relay 219 but still same issue. Fans just wont shut of.
Tried to find the other relay that you need to wire in but cant find it?
Fault codes are the following.
18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1: Open or Short to Ground
P1672 - 004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
Readiness: 0010 1101
As i understand it there is the Fan module to choose from next?
Any other ideas or things to check?
