Default Climate control security code

Two of the pixels are dead on my climate control readout (dual zone climate w/heated seats). I ordered a new climate control with the same part number 8T1 820 043 AC through LKQ. After hooking it up, it works for about 2 seconds, then locks me out. The off button just flashes.

There is apparently a six digit security code that needs to entered into the VAG COM. Does anyone have any clue how I might be able to obtain it? It is ridiculous to me that I would have to go to the dealer for something so simple.

Right, I guess that's what it is. This component protection prevents me from plugging and playing any new component on the car, apparently. Even with a Ross-Tech, I'm unable to put this part in, is that right?

Correct. Only a dealer or sometimes authorized VW/Audi repair shops can perform this function. A connection must be made between your car and VW/Audi's servers to tie that new control module to your VIN. Most new/replacement control modules, but not all, will go into component protection.

As an follow up, my local dealer charged me $90 to reset the component protection on the new unit. I guess it could be worse, but considering I only paid $60 for the part and there is no legitimate reason to code a part like this to a car, it's a little frustrating.

Once upon a time, I could walk into my local Audi dealer for something like this and flag a mechanic and they'd just help me out. Now, that place is gone. The new place has gleaming white floors, walls and furniture and a coffee bar the size of a studio apartment, so no more out of warranty freebees for me
