Default 'D' transmission issue - Is this Normal?

I recently bought a used 2013 S4 Prestige. When I am driving in the 'D' transmission setting (as opposed to S or manual), the car cyles up to a really high gear for the speed I'm in.

For example, at 45-50 mph, the car will be in its highest gear. I can confirm that by moving the shift to the side into manual, and it will show M7. This means that when I'm driving 45 on a highway, it is usually groaning in a high gear at a really low RPM if I go faster, because it is geared up so high.

No issues with S. I just don't like to drive around in S 100% of the time.

Can you guys please advise if this is normal?

Yes, that's normal. It's for fuel efficiency and comfort.

Don't have a DSG trans, but I am wondering if you have the Sport Dif. If so, changing from Auto to Dynamic will also give you a different feel. In Dynamic, the throttle response will be much more sporty. Make the car feel much different. So you can adjust the behavior of your car with both the transmission and Sport dif setting. Play around with them until you find something you like.

Yes going to the S setting, or Dynamic mode totally changes the DSG shift points and throttle mapping regardless of if you have the sport diff or not. It becomes a completely different car.

Thanks, this is big time disappointing, but we will make it work. I can't stand hearing the exhaust groan in a high gear all the time while driving 45-52 mph, but the S just doesn't seem like it is good for the transmission as a default gear.

I don't think it will hurt the transmission any, but it will totally ruin your fuel economy

(tear falls down face)
so true. The paddles/M gear are taking a while to get used to, but at least I wouldn't hear the groaning. Does anyone use them as their primary mode of travel with the DSG?

Yes, pretty much, unless I'm just casually driving around town, stuck in traffic or cruising along with ACC engaged. I consider manual mode the default mode for a DSG and the automatic modes are just there for convenience. I also use the shifter if I don't need both hands on the wheel, otherwise the paddles.
