'D' transmission issue - Is this Normal?

I think the speed range for the gear your talking about is normal. In my experience, 47 mph is the threshold for going into M7. Anything below 47 mph will only get you to M6. When you say the words groan or groaning, do you mean drone? Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, that's your issue. I have a DSG transmission with a stock exhaust system and drive around primarily in D (auto) with no such groan or groaning. My fake soundakator set to Dynamic is music to my ears.

I use the automatic modes for when I'm stuck in traffic and manual shifting for any chance I get to have fun.

are you sure you are only hearing "drone on acceleration?
