Default Deciding between a used B8 S4 or B7 RS4

I've been out of the Audi scene for about 5 years. I used to have a 2001 A4 APR Stage 3+, but then had 3 kids and needed space for car seats and got a minivan =(. I am now looking to get a used B8 S4 or a used B7 RS4. Budget $35-40K. This car would not be a daily driver. My brother has a B8 S4 and I really like the look, interior, and how it drives. I always wanted an RS4 though. The cost to mod up a B8 S4 to 420 HP would probably be in the 3-5K range. I doubt I would put a supercharger on the RS4 ($15k from APR) though. Anyone else contemplate this when they bought their S4?

I've always loved the look of the RS4 and in the NE, they are very rare, but I never considered getting a V8 when I purchased my S4, since the stock performance was very similar with newer generation platform.
If I wasn't concerned about warranty and had 5k to spend on performance, I'd probably go APR stage 2 ECU and pulley upgrade, AWE exhaust and aftermarket intake. Although, I guess if it was a manual, you'd want to upgrade the clutch as well.

Really like the B7 RS4, when I started to shop I also looked at both (used RS vs newer S4)...went with the B8.5 S4. Stock performance was close enough for me, the increased fuel economy in the supercharged v6 and ability to increase it's performance relatively cheaply did the trick. I haven't looked back since.

Drive them both.

Believe you will find the S4 B8 is a much better performer than the RS4 B7.

Too bad we cannot get the RS4 B8 in the US. Sigh.

This question has been asked a dozen times, although this is YOUR first. Get the B8 S4, it is newer better. Audi sold the B& RS4 owners down the river when they released the B8 s4, for a lot less money you got a better car. With a tune, performance of B8 is equal or better.

Thanks for the replies! I am leaning towards the S4 because it is newer and not as high maintenance as the RS4(carbon build up). RS4 just has that appeal because it is rare and the top of the line model at that time.

The only thing I miss from our B7 is the V8 rumble.

Default It's a no brainer...

I considered the same 'dilemma' that you are going through.. BUT after seeing this video with the S4 added chip, it was a no brainer!! The HP is now 413 & cost about $1200! Seriously, save yourself thousands of dollars.

Note the S4 gas mileage is SUPERIOR to RS4 (because it is a v8).
ALSO, I love my car so much, I did a Car Review-- Check it out too

Good Luck!

Glad someone already posted that Chris Harris video, because it immediately came to mind when I saw the title of this thread! (Note: I also just bought a B8 S4, but had considered an RS4).

depends what you want from your car i bought an s4 6spd thinking its close enough. Sold it in about a month. Was itchin for rs til i got mine. Not the fastest so if thats your thing, go s4. simple mods big speed. But it you just love the feel and rumble or a monster v8, sharp steerring, basically a few less nannys rs4 is for you. Pretige is nice, i see s4s everyday, multiple times a day. I dont like that, i like to feel somewhat exclusive. Its all personal preference though. Peoples reactions, “Oh its an “R” s4!?” Then proceed to bomard you with questions. Never gets old.
