I use a 32GB in my car and it's about 95% full and I have no issues. My directory structure is Artist/Album/file name.

And yes, I need my metric crapton of music

So either the MMI is pretty lame for higher capacity SD cards, or mine's busted, or I'm still doing something wrong.

I'll have to pop this SD card into someone else's car sometime and see if the results are the same...
Even if you have less than 4,000 files you may still be hitting the limit if you still have a large number of folders. If you add the files + folders are you close to 4,000 ? On the SD card readers on my RS4 you can only have about 400 files max so 4,000 will seem pretty liberating when I get my S4 in a couple of months.

OK - problem solved. Originally I had over 5,000 songs on the SD card. I backed it down to right around 4,000 and still had problems. Now I'm hovering around 3,400 files and its working fine.

Directory structure/depth didn't seem to have an impact - but I didn't do exhaustive testing on that. The number of files really seems to be the gating factor.

Hi, what card are you using please?
I can get an 8GB micro sd (in an adapter) to work but my 8GB SDHC just displays card unreadable.

Please forgive me for what may be a noob question (I take delivery of my S4 tomorrow).

Why do you need to have a directory structure at all? Doesn't the OS allow sorting and searching by artist, genre, title, etc?

How about playlists?

Thanks,
Steve

Generally speaking, having directories actually speeds things up. The process of finding an individual file in a directory goes a lot more smoothly if the directory has a reasonable number of files. You'd never notice the difference on a small card, but if you're pushing the 4000 file limit, putting them in directories will actually speed things up.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I understand why directories will speed up access and search time for files.

Why does it matter if the MMI has an iTunes type interface where you can select a genre, artist, or album? Or maybe MMI does not allow that?

I guess I will find out tomorrow when I pick up my S4. I have a 16Gb SD card loaded up with about 2,000 AAC files all in the root directory.

I bought two of these for the Audi - both of them have worked fine. Newegg reviews are good and the price is reasonable.

So can I put almost 4000 files on per SD card or is that the total between the two cards?

Also, what if I want to put 1000 files on the MMI hard drive? Would I then be able to have a total of approximately 9000 files combined between the two SD cards and the hard drive?

Default SD car not readable

I've got a 2009 audi a4 and when I insert an SDHC card, it says "not readable". I have tried each of the three formats available, but does not seem to help.

Can anyone help me with this?
