2011 here and mine has always shifted by itself short, in manual mode. 1st through 3rd. Only in 'S' does it ever actually reach redline.

I don't have this issue. Was able to run to 6000+ rpm in 1st and 2nd no problem just the other night.

Wait, I thought all s-tronics short shift...I guess not. Or are we talking about holding gear? we can't hold a gear in high RPM terrority without it having it kicking up a gear right?

No they all don't short shift... haven't really tried to hold a gear at 6000RPM+ while driving as I see no reason to drive like that but the car is capable of it...

IMO from experience at lesast on my car, it's a function of throttle position and rpm not just rpm... what I mean is say you are at 6K rpm excelerating slowly with say 3/4 throttle the car will let me go to redline... but say I am excellerating at 1/3 or so throttle position the car will shift before redline... there is probably a table or set of values that determine these shift points so to say...

A DSG tune will be able to modify these parameters and avoid any kind of auto shift in manual mode... If we ever get a tune...

However, I am probably in the small minority because I think this tranny is incredible... does it have it's occasional issues, sure but I have learned to drive around them... the only thing I want fixed is the delay at 3800rpm when launching and to ensure my shifts never hangup... I'm fine with the rest... 1.6x 60ft times pretty much speak for themselves with the launch and the shifts at WOT are perfect everytime and FAST!... just my .02

For autocrossing, I like to hold it in gear without having to worry about kicking it up a gear. Unfortunately that's not the case. At least that's what I remember. Maybe I'm getting a bit confused now. I'll have to check it tomorrow morning. I wish I got the 6MT, but getting the s-tronic was a compromise for me so my wife can drive it as well.

for DSG owners who go autocrossing, how do you deal with auto down shift while in manual mode?
from time to time DSG down shifts one split second before you do. totally annoying.

The only time it will auto downshift is if you are well under 1,500 RPMs, if you are this low, you are in the wrong gear anyway and it's doing you a favor downshifting.

Thanks for the info. It's reassuring. Guess I should do fine if I decide to take my first DSG to autocross.
