I was very curious as to why I couldn't find any mainstream outlets to purchase a new battery from. (mine is fine...just thinking about down the road)...

My SA (his dealership sells GMC, Buick, Infiniti, Mazda and Audi) kept telling me how incredible Audi's were in cold starting conditions. He went on to say that this past winter when the other brands were getting jump started all the time whenever they wanted to move a car...the Audi's always started.

Well first off...when I really looked at the battery I couldn't believe how big it was! This thing is HUGE!

So I pulled the battery cover off today and here's what I found.

Manufacturer...Varta...Johnson Controls company

Cold Cranking amps...920! To me...that's a pretty big number...

Battery capacity. 110 ah...another big number.

I entered the batteries item number into my google search and found this...(I know it says BMW M5...but this data sheet also mentions Audi and the part numbers match perfectly to my S4).

IMO...this is one heck of a battery and it's another area of proof the amount of engineering Audi places on every aspect of their vehicles!!!

I have not seen anything posted about our batteries and thought this was worth sharing...

Good find. Batteries is one area where car manufacturers try to cut costs. Thankfully Audi doesn't seem to be one of them.

I got to see the battery a cpl days ago when I was getting the tow hook out of the tool box.
I have to say I haven't seen a battery that big since my days in the army!

not that unusual for a German car. You can buy one at autozone or advanced auto for around $119 with order on line discount. Very large capacity battery.around 900 CCA.it is vented so you have to attach vent line to battery, and put plug that is attached to pos terminal cover into side of battery opposite to the vent line connection. Harder to describe than do.

I should have been clearer. The battery I linked is $1599 on Amazon. It's a lithium starter battery that weighs 14 pounds but has the full spec of an OEM battery. The new BMW M4 has a lithium battery standard. This is the way of the future.

You could use a BB battery HR22-12 which also weighs 14 pounds but costs quite a lot less. I used these in a 48V telco backup battery that pulled 280A loads on a daily basis with no trouble at all.

You can get a really cheap, really light lithium battery but it's not a good idea. If you want one that meets or exceeds OEM, you have to spend $1500-$2500. Otherwise you risk getting stranded with the super low capacity models.

Lithium is a far better technology than lead acid. It's the future.
