Default S mode?

I just test drove a 2012 Audi S4 Premium Plus with the 7-speed auto that had an "S" under the "D" (Drive) slot on the gear shift. I have looked at a lot of 2011/2012 models...all of which claim to have the S-tronic but this was the only one that had it. I was told that it tightens the suspension and hangs onto the gears longer for better performance but I was wondering which package this S (sport?) mode option is included with. They didn't seem to have the build sheet handy and everything I look at online neglects to mention this as a package or option. Does that mean it had the rear sport differential too?

Secondly, is getting the sport rear differential a must or is it unnecessary? I don't plan to take this car to the track or do anything crazy...but I do like to have some fun from time to time as well...that being said not sure how much I would be able to really utilize its capabilities.

Thanks!

Can't your question regarding the transmission..... But on the Sports Diff, my personal opinion is get it. If you read through the various threads on this forum you find that it's generally agreed as a must have. Even if you don't track, I think this option will pay off when it's time to sell.

For model years prior to 2013, the "S" position on the shifter is only there if the car doesn't have Audi Drive Select. It puts the transmission and engine in sport mode giving you a sharper throttle response and the transmission holds gears longer. For cars with Audi Drive Select the same thing is accomplished by putting Audi Drive Select in Dynamic mode. In order to get Audi Drive Select, the car either needs to be equipped with the sport differential and/or the adaptive suspension and/or dynamic steering.

And here I thought it HAD an extra package. Thank you very much!
