Default Tint & Clear Bra done!

Check it out! I'll upload more pics of the car after I get the racks finished (just got the Whispbar rails put on today...they look SWEET!)

15% VLT on this bad boy. It's just right (w/ the rear camera night backup is no problem).

Bra coverage (combination of Venture shield, std durable 3m and Xpel ultimate):
- Full hood, headlights/door mirrors, full front & rear fenders, A-pillars up and back across the roof line (protect the areas the rack sits), 1st part of the roof to moon roof opening, inside the doors on the rails where you step

Thanks for everyone's guidance to date!

Very nice!

I'll have to buy you another coffee some time in the future and check it all out in person.

The TINT looks great.

But, could you help me understand why people do Clearbra? I just don't get it.

Because we don't like rock chips or love bug acid stains and don't want to have to get a respray every couple of years because we like our original paint.

The reason some folks do clear bra is to avoid stone chips. Ever since vehicle manufactures started using water based paints the vehicle paint itself chips easily. Especially in busy highways where you have gravel trucks and heavy traffic like SoCal. I went with Xpel Ultimate paint film on my Q5 and have no regrets. With a proper install you do not even notice the film on the paint. Of course you forgo the paint film altogether but eventually you will have to repaint the front end. I see as pay now or pay later. Just my thoughts.

Are these protections removable without damaging the original paint? 4 years from now, Can you remove it And the paint looks brand new?

Yes, it can be peeled off at any time with no issues to the paint. Any remaining glue residue can be removed easily with a bit of isopropyl alcohol.

My full front Xpel Ultimate treatment has prevented all rock chips for 7000 miles and remains smooth as a baby's butt. It was worth every penny. My last Audi with no film applied had at least half a dozen paint chips by the same mileage.

Completely agree and that was my motivation. For me, since I'm using the car for a variety of purposes (i.e. driving up in the Colorado mountains to ski) there are a lot of "chip exposures" that I'd rather just prevent now vs. get annoyed by it and then have the "I really should fix that" conversation going on!

The guy I went to had awesome reviews and in daylight, you literally can stare at the car and not know it has a clear bra. Full hood = the way to go

I'm curious - you mentioned you have a combination of Venture Shield, 3M and Xpel Ultimate; why didn't you go with Xpel Ultimate all the way?

Long story short, different types for different purposes.

Basically one was used on the hood b/c you can get it in 60" and have a no seam look, another used for front bumper areas and lights b/c it is more durable / resistant to impacts and the last was used on the rear bumper area b/c it has self-healing properties since that will be a higher traffic area (putting things in / taking them out).

hope that helps

Interesting. I had Xpel Ultimate installed everywhere on the hood, front fenders, front bumper, mirrors, rocker panels and rear bumper loading section because of the self healing properties. Xpel Ultimate is available in a 60" roll so no seams on the hood. They wrapped all my edges where possible as well. The Ultimate is more expensive than other films though.

About $1600 in the Boston area by one of the top detailers in the country - Unique Car Care owned by Rick Nelson.

Here's a good example of the Xpel Ultimate work they do:

OK,... I've read all of the responses regarding the film but my biggest hesitation is not knowing how the film will affect the "gloss" appearance of the paint.

I like to use a clay bar and wax my car to get a great shine and I am curious whether the film dulls the look or affects of a nicely waxed car.

Will the film hold dirt? Is it harder to clean? On a white car, will it show stains or tarnish when it gets dirty? Will it bond to the paint under extreme heat and thus do damage to the paint job?

I can't help but think that it won't look as good.

Thanks for the help

Get a good film with a good installer and you won't know it's there. It does require maintenance (clean with a film cleaner and seal) but its super durable with really no drawbacks. I'd stick to Xpel ultimate for the film

My Xpel Ultimate looks as new as when it was installed last July. While you can't use abrasives on any film, you really don't need to with the Ultimate - it seems to wash dirt off easily and using a bit of isopropyl alchohol takes care of the occasional stubborn bug or tar spots.

You can wax it like the rest of the car and due to it's own clear coat (unusual for a film), provides a great shine and you have to be less than 12" away to see that it's even there. Add in the unique self healing properties and it's the way to go IMO.

My installer uses Xpel Ultimate exclusively for many outrageously expensive, exotic cars. When I pass by his shop, it's always loaded with R8s, Ferraris, Porches, Lambos, etc.

I just came across this and thought it looked great! Has anybody seen it up close? I'm thinking of getting for my new IBIS WHITE S4 when it arrives.

I suppose if you would like a matte vs. glossy finish on your car this could work. I prefer to see reflections on my car's shiny paint so this would be a non-starter for me.
