Default True winter vs AS Tires

I have in the past gotten winter tires but this year we are traveling a lot including going from Michigan down south where snow tires would be an issue.

I have the Dunlop summer tires and was thinking of getting a good A/S instead of winter tires.

I have had the Michelin AS3's but never got to drive them in the winter, decent summer tire but if you had to get a A/S what would it be?

I have the 19" wheel option and I will only have these tires on for the winter, in the spring I'll put back on the Dunlops.

honestly, if you're going to switch, why not get full dedicated winters? its more peace of mind knowing that the rubber holding you to the ground is better for winter conditions instead of so-so performance/safety on A/S tires...

If you are going to run 2 sets of tires, only a summer/winter tire set up makes sense. All season, which I run, only make sense if you only want to run one tire all year AND your winters are not severe. Some will trash all sesaons, but they have worked just fien for me the last 10 yrs here in eastern PA. Ran them on my B6 S4, 335i, and 2 B8 S4s. It all depends where you live and how you drive.

Have a look at the Tire Rack resources to learn more. I went with dedicated winter tires and I don't live in a climate as bad as yours.

Default AW

I opted for the AWRadials that came with the S4. they are Contis and work great.

why all weathers:
no room for a second set of tires
local dealer does not have a tire storage program.

had to go through a blizzard in the Colorado mountains right after the car arrived. Cars all over the road. snow plows everywhere. did not have a problem on the 5 hour drive.

We have used AW tires with our AWD cars for a dozen years with no problem. Last time I used dedicated winter tires was for the M3 which was rear wheel drive. Blizzaks worked great. But we had more garage storage then.

(Unlike our Subaru the Audi does not have a heated windshield to keep the wipers ice free. Had to use the S4 defrost which is noisy but it works.)

All season tires I ruled out on performance grounds.

But, in the category, here's a link to reviews which may matter to you.

A winter or snow tire is going to be much better when the climate gets below freezing and you have to deal with slippery roads.

If you are going to be driving on dry pavement most of the time you can get away with an all season.

Typically all seasons also have higher tread wear rates so if you plan on racking up a lot of miles in the colder months they might be a better choice for you.

I will say the control and improved braking you have with a winter tire over an all season is second to none.

I agree winter is better but in the next 4 months of winter here in Michigan for more than 1/3 of it I will be traveling down south with the car and warm weather destroys winter tires.

Yeah, if you're not expecting severe winter, get A/S tires. NEW all season tires can be ok, in all but deeper snow and ice. A treated road, they're fine.

Got the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3's installed tonight.

Little bit louder than the Continental summer tires but everything else is much improved. Better turn in feel, bit more high speed stability, a more progressive slide than understeer.

Really happy with them and I always thought the Continental's looked a bit narrow, these are the opposite and sit nice and square with the wheel.

Based on reviews I read and my own experience with them previously I may not take them off, just put the Continentals on when I turn the car in.
