Default Call me stunned...

I just talked with a co-worker and he said that there should be NO sales tax on out of state purchases!! I'm going back to AAA to confront them about this. Might be getting a refund..crossing fingers!

Default That doesn't sound right...

I had to pay sales tax, and they wanted to see the bill of sale. If you find out otherwise, please e-mail me and I will try to get my money back also. Thanks...

Default Will do

I was a bit skeptical, but he insisted that you do not pay tax on out of state purchases. You are susposed to pay tax IN the State you made the purchase in. I'm not sure, but I'll check it out and post back what I find.

Default WHOA....thats a news flash right there.

But don't you have to pay sales tax somewhere? Like the state you actually bought it from, if they do have a sales tax?
Shoot...keep us in the loop bro. I don't wanna pay anymore than I have to!!!

Default Latest info I could find

Per the CA tax code (and confirmed by a call to a DMV rep), a vehicle purchased out of state and then brought into CA within 90 days of purchase is subject to use tax when registered. The only break you get is that if you have to pay tax in the state where the vehicle was purchased, then CA will graciously allow a credit for that amount against your CA taxes.

About what I expected to find out...they get you one way or another. Oh well...

Default One small thing...

At least the Blue Book value of my S4 was higher in CA by about $1100 over the Blue Book for the same car in Florida...

I find it a good rule, not to mention the fact that it alleviates some anger, to not complain about taxes unless you're independently wealthy enough to pave your own roads, build, equip and staff your own police/fire/paramedics, etc. Just pay what's due. Be happy. Move on
