b5 rs4 reps painted gunmetal ... mini write-up and pics
So I swapped out my rs4 reps for the winter - and got bored of looking at road-rashed silver... and decided to freshen up the paint - but with gunmetal grey.
Mini write-up...
1. medium steel-wooled all surfaces
2. then sanded with 800 grit
3. used 280 to take out chips (feathering with 800)
4. spot puddied gouges and sanded
5. cleaned thoroughly with water
6. masked tire off by putting 4"x6" postit-type cardstock between rim and tire @ 45 degrees (overlapping with a bit of tape holding everything in place).
6.1 primed with an all purpose primer paint
7. used duplicolor wheel paint in thin even over lapping applications (5 minutes between applications)
I let them dry a day or so - and decided they weren't glossy enough.
8. So I wet sanded with 800
9. used duplicolor wheel clear coat same as 7 - then applied a final thick gloss layer to get the 'gloss' look
How'd i do the caps you ask? Simple... I cut a plastic coke bottle to size, placed it over cap/logo.. then painted.
Any regrets? well.. i'd prolly leave out the last step as it resulted in super high shine - but also left some areas with a 'crackle' effect (you'll note in the pics). Its not so bad that i'll redo it though.
the final result...

clarification...
clearcoat = gloss.... I clearcoated several times with 'thin' coats - but it never really turned smooth and glossy (like a paintgun would do). I experimented and found that if I applied the clearcoat quite thick - it turned out pretty good. however- you run the chance of it running... which would be baaad.
I'd suggest playing on a test area first to get the 'feel' of it.
