Default Bad chain tensioner

The chain tensioner(s) are going bad (100k miles) now.
Do I need to change the the pads only, or the entire tensioners?

What is involved to do the work?
Front clip off
timing belt covers off
timing belt off
intake etc. off
valve covers off
remove cams

That's right, basically a full timing belt job plus pulling the cams. You probably should do the cam seals too. My guess is that you'll need to replace the entire tensioning element, not just the pads.

How do you "know" they're bad? As for intake coming off, that's a no. I did my cam seals and cam tensioner seals and didn't need to remove the intake. Only removed the intake cam. that was it. Another thing, looking at my tensioner pads, they looked just fine. Could find a single wear mark on them. So unless your running ridiculously low oil, their shouldn't be an issue.

Oh and I've got 160k on my S4.. just rolled into it.
