I just replaced bank 1 sensor 1 with the Bosch O2 sensor. It is the first code related repair I tackled myself. When does the CEL reset? Should it go off immediately if I did the work right or do I need to clear the codes and hope it does not come back? Silly question but if the repair is not done right it is not worth my trip to where I have access to a code reader. Thanks.

You can disconnect the battery for a while - I think. I've had the CEL clear by itself, but that was for a different issue.

Defintely get a VAGCOM cable.

I believe the CEL should not reappear when you start the car if all the CEL related issues were resolved.

This is different from "readiness" which takes a certain amount of time to run through.

It will clear after the ecu clears the code. I think it is 50 miles or something.

Drove it for awhile (approx 50 miles) and the code cleared. Went right to the emissions testing station and passed. I forgot how nice it is to not have to look at the light all the time. Thanks for the replies. The future is scary now that I have broken the seal on doing work on this car...
