$75 intake, compairable to K&N kit
I wish i took Photos as i was doing, but i wasnt thinking...soo ill just share what i did in a small write up, i got the idea from the DIY Zflow Darintake mod post, and figured i could pull this off in a sunday afternoon, now he suggested going to a muffler shop and having pipe bent...well i went to auto zone and for $40 bucks u get the Specter air intake kit, comes with about 18" to 20" of 3" aluminum pipe with a 22o or 30o bend in the end of it. and then the applicable cone filter, try and get one that has the intake on the end as well then all you need is some silicone sealant $5 at home depot.
Step 1, remove the entire air box, top and bottom with the MAF but not the Accordion Hose
Step 2, cut a hole in the bottom of the air box at the lowest point, i cut a good sized hole at about 4" by 6" give or take, dont worry about a screen as the end of the filter will be right in this hole.
step 3, take the air intake pip kit, remove the MAF, and from the inside of the airbox fit it so that the bend is being placed in where the MAF would be try and keep it flush below where the washer is on the box, now mark off where u think ull be able to fit the filter, dosnt have to be exact as your going to cut a little and try it out until u get the fit.
step 4, the pipe kit i got came with holes pre drilled for a breather hose or something, ur gona need to plug these, the kit comes with plugs for one and the other has to be cut down flush to fit in the air box, i simply found a machine screw that fit pretty tight, cut it down and then threaded it in as far as i could, the other i simply put some silicone on the cap provided just encase
step 5, once u get the fitment down so that you can latch the entire airbox back up move over the the outlet of the air box where the MAF is mounted. take some of the silicone and spread it evenly around the pipe so that its completely sealed then reattach the MAF(after its dry of course)
step 6, Reassemble, and connect all the sensors again, i wiggled my entire box in, in one piece as i hada really cram the intake pipe and filter in, i didn't wanna try and latch it in the cramped engine bay
and thats it, u know can use a cone filter and dont have to sacrifice ur air box and be exposed to the high engine bay temps
this is the only photo i had of it all done

I think this is more of an issue when people over oil the filters. I've had a K&N on my VW MKIII and IVs and in my B7 never had a problem. I also have a Oiled foam drop-in in the A6 since I've had the car never had a problem. That one's been cleaned several times over. I must say when I go through the effort of cleaning the filters I usually take the time to clean the MAF while I'm at it. Using this: http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/Misc/CR...aner_05110.PDF
Perhaps that is what has saved me, but I think it more a matter of over-oiling than anything else.

Definitely don't use oiled fiters with 2.7t engine, even more so with anything that pumps over stock pressure as the amount of air sucked into and resulting air velocity is just sucking the oil in regardless.

Don't use any oil bath filter at all. Oil bath filters are original tech (read old as hell). The first air filters were steel wool in an oil bath. They stunk. New oil bath filters are not much of an improvement.
Get a high quality high volume (tons of pleats and area) paper filter.
The horsepower gained using an oil bath filter like an K&N is negligible compared to the amount of dirt you will ingest or the amount of headache you will get cleaning and "recharging" the silly thing.
I've had K&Ns marketing people call and e-mail me harrassing me for stating their products are indeed junk. I've even had them pose as "engineers" while doing so. And as an engineer, I can spot their foul logic quicker than they can read their scripted lies.
Don't fall to aggressive marketing and sweet ads.... if you do I see a bottle of ***** pills in your near future too.

Not at all, the problem is when the user goes to clean the filter and applies way too much oil causing it to be very wet instead of a thin layer of oil that dries before it goes back into the car. Some people just cant follow directions.
