Front Aluminum uprights in the 00 S4
#17
They were offered because of weight savings and especially unsprung weight savings...

They were trumpeted as a feature and that is the configuration used to determine the B5 S4's weight. Of course, after the introduction and after all of the magazine road tests, they discontinued them.
No doubt they were discontinued due to cost. The later iron ones are much easier to make. Also, the aluminium ones need steel insert to hold the tie rod ends at bottom. Those have a habit of coming out when you change the control links (see photo). On the other hand, they don't seem to have the same problems with corrosion on the upper bolt that the iron ones have. Another problem with the aluminium ones is that they are more easily damaged in an accident if you hit a wheel.

Did you have to roll the fender lips, and cut out the plastic rock shields?
I have the Al uprights and would like to run the following two sets of wheels with a big brake kit and stock ride height:
B6 Avus (18x8, 43 offset) with 8mm spacers
BBS RE775 (18x8, 35 offset)
A 255/35-18 would be ideal, due to no speedo error and fat size. But I'm wasn't sure if anything bigger than 235/40-18 would fit under the front and rear fenders without fender rolls and plastic rock shield mods.
Also the tire guides only recommend 245/40-18 max on a 8.0 wide rim...
It was confirmed that the big brake kit would fit behind the two wheel/spacer combos, the tire size is the only question mark.
Any further insight from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Do any of you guys know how much more clearance the aluminum uprights allow on our cars, and are they still available for purchase? Are RS4 uprights any different?
