How critical are the piston oil squirters?
...because it looks like I broke one. I don't know how, but I must have bent it or something when I broke the motor down for the rebuild - it looks like the piston hit it and snapped one side of one of the squirters off. Found it wedged in the oil pump intake.
I don't know which cylinder it's from, or if the other squirters are damaged as well.

Ok, so they are pretty critical, which is what I figured. I was hoping to limp around for a few days, but this is tempting fate. Time to break her down....again.

Haha. Just what it says man - did a pretty complete rebuild to prep the car to handle peak output of the RS6 turbos - everything went quite well except for this issue with the one oil squirter...
I've got the motor out again and am just waiting on the replacement squirter.
You still running your S4 or did you get a new ride?

Since I've posted here last. I've pulled the engine again and replaced the K04 CHRAs with new ones. (blown) Also replaced the oil pump.
Blew the drivers side turbo outlet hose off a couple weeks ago. Not a fun fix with a broken thumb.

Damn, how many miles were on those K04's? Couldn't have been that many...
Glad to see you stuck with the S4 - I'm trying to figure out what to do with mine. It's no good as a daily at this point and I'm not sure if I want to put in a roll cage, 5-point belts and all that crap to make it rallysport worthy.

You only need the piston squirters for prolonged WOT. If it's just short little bursts you probably could get away without them; however you don't want to run with one of them broken off as this could drop the oil pressure in the oil plenum locally if depending on how big the opening is at the break.

New Squirters
Thanks for all the help and advice guys! The boys at VAST took pity on me and sent me two new squirters for no charge (they are 70 buck a pop from the dealer) so I'm going to go ahead and install those suckers correctly and get my car on the road again.
