I've owned both tip and 6sp B5 S4s
My first S4 was a new tip bought in 01. It was ASP stage 3, with level 10 torque convertor and valve body. It takes more effort to mod the tip car and the tranny still cant take it. My tranny eventually went dead at 240K miles.
I also have a 6sp. Depending on how far you intend on modding, the costs can be great as well. My clutch jobs (not your average 6sp) involve pulling the engine so the costs can add up.
After spending tons of money on both S4s I have advice that you may find useful. Save yourself headache and tons of money by not going mod crazy. Stage 2 with a good suspension can make you very happy. When I add up all the money I've spent it makes me sick and I wonder why my wife hasnt cut my throat in my sleep yet. But when I feel the Gt28s spool up and scream I forget the pain.

I love the S4 in a stick, but I just bought an auto S4 Avant. WHY you may ask? Mostly because it is my commuter car and twice in the past few years I've broken an arm or hand and driving my E30 M3 with one hand is NO FUN... Commuting in the E30 is no fun, putting my 100lb rotweiler in the E30 ain't happening, Snowboarding, nope... Sooo an automatic S4 was a great choice for me having a very fun manual car for track and weekend use. I'm very excited to have an S4 Avant, I've wanted one since I was a kid!! maybe someday my uncle will get rid of his manual S4 Avant and I can pick that one up. Until then I'm happy to not shift.
