I found the chip itself. Question: the M and A boxes aren't interchangable. But,
I've got an A box with a chip in it. I'm going to remove the chip from the board. Can I use solder this chip onto the M box board without issues? I imagine it would be fine since the chip has already been programmed etc. Also, anyone know how I can be sure to match the pins up correctly? I don't want to incorrectly install the chip and fry it. TIA

As long as you are trying to keep Abox programming. The ECU devices are all identical. Only the sofware is differant. No need to remap the flash chip pins. The surface mount chips should both have a key mark to show which pin is 1. Just make sure 1 goes to 1 and they chips will be properly inplace.

After you switch the chips you should use VAG-COM to change the ecu coding to tell it that it is an A box now.
All B5 S4 ecus are the same except for the 1999 model year in Europe if I recall.
There is a little dimple on the chip that indicates which pin is the first pin. Use that to figure out the orientation of the chips.
If you send the ecu to me, I can copy them or reprogram them for you if you want. Or you can wait a couple of weeks until I release my free ecu flashing software and do it yourself. Or you can come to my website and talk to other people about how to flash the ecu yourself.

I spoke to a local tuning shop and the sales dude doesn't think it'll work. He says taking the chip from the A box and installing it in the M box will not work due to the ESP system and different programming. This doesn't completely make sense to me: I was under the impression that the chips themselves are the same so wouldn't they be able to do what you are talking about and reprogram it to work with the M box????

My free flashing software is almost done.
Free logging software will be after that.
