Talked in depth with the VP (Russ H) of Audi NA, he said that it will indeed be a V8 in the next S4. Somewhere around 330-360hp, etc. A thing to note here is that the V8 is not any heavier than the 2.7T, so people complaning about it being "heavy" are just caught up in the whole V8 misconception.
He also mentioned a lot of other things, like,
Audi is going to position themselves around the M line of BMW, meaning the S cars will be cheaper than the M cars, and the RS-cars will be around the same price, if not a little more expensive. The RS6 is confirmed for the US, but there will only be about 800 per year, and most likely 2 years of production. There will also be an RS4 although he didn't have any info for us on it as it is just starting the experimental phase (I think).
Also mentioned that I found pretty interesting is that since Audi has aquired lambroghini recently, you can expect to see some design cues and influences from them in the next generation S cars (like after the B6 S4 possibly). He even mentioned the possibility of help from lambo on engines...
Also mentioned was the fact that Audi has been somewhat dissapointed with the recent a quisition of cosworth as a tuner/company working for Audi. He basically said things have been slow. He also said that Audi has been outsourcing a lot of experimental tuning type projects to smaller tuning shops. (ie: abt, mtm?)
We asked him about an Audi Certified aftermarket tuner and he mentioned something about seeing something coming from Champion Audi, but he wouldn't tell us anything else...but he definitely hinted at the fact.
He also said that Audi is running 3 works R8's at Sebring, and then Champion is running their car also. That's about it, some other guys will probably pick up on info I have missed...
This was at the grand opening of University Audi's new Audi showroom/facility.
