My rubber is leaking! :D
Ok, replaced the timing belt, etc. yesterday. Oh what fun... Anyway, at one point while I was under the car, I decided to inspect the steering components and whatnot. Glad I did, because I discovered that the inner CV boot on the driver's side has a big tear in the top of it, and there was a lot of old crusty dried up grease on top of it. I know the boots are cheap and relatively easy to replace, but I don't know how long it's been leaking and/or if there's any permanent damage to the joint.
So, just a quick question: once I get the boot off for replacement, what indications would be signs that the joint, and not just the boot, needs replacing? I haven't heard any popping sounds when turning or anything like that... I just don't want to go through all the trouble if I'm going to have to turn around and pull the axle back off again in a few months.
TIA for any advice/suggestions.
Jeremy

If you don't know when the boot failed, I normally would not trust the joint if it is dry inside or has been open for an unknown amount of time, but inner joints wear less than outer's. You could remove it and clean to see if there is visible scratching/scoring or excessive wear. Here is an option for you:

Hey, thanks for the reply and the link. $20 isn't bad compared to what most parts for this car seem to cost.
I think Audi went out of their way to make everything proprietary, difficult to work on, and require special tools. I'm beginning to hate working on this car.

I'd replace that joint all together - once moisture and dirt get in there just replacing the boot may not be enough.
