if anyone wants help or pictures with timing belt changes let me know..
Im thinking about changing my timing belt/water pump. If you have pictures handy can you send them to me at yankee81116@aol.com

I just did my timing belt, water pump, thermostat, idle/tensioner rollers this past weekend and I agree with you about not really needing the CAM locking bar. Almost everyone has said it is essential, but i just made a couple marks on my Cams, crank and on the old belt, transfered the marks to my new belt, and through much difficulty, slipped the belt on. The new belt was def. tighter than the old one and i had to put a wrench on my cams to move them a little so i could get the slack needed to put the belt around the crank, but it all worked out alright in the end. The car runs great and if i were to do it again, i still wouldnt pay for the cam locking tool! I think that the most difficult part of the entire job is probably getting the damn bumper off!!!

So, what is the consensus about that funny tranny tool? Is it needed for the S4? i was looking to do my tranny and rear dif fluids. do i need anything more than standard Hex tools? Also, someone here mentioned just getting mobil one 75w90...i heard that you can do that for the rear diff, but that it is not recommended for the tranny? is that right? I was looking to do the Motul for both to be safe? any thoughts...

ill let you know in a couple weeks when i get home to change my fluid. i glanced under the car and it looked like a hex bolt not that crazy inverted star. i bet some cars have a different plug in the tranny.i did some research and i ended up buying 75w90 mobil 1 synthetic gear fluid to use in both the tranny and rear diff.

@ r1de23: I decided to stop being lazy and just got under the car to verify the needed tool. I have a Torx-55 that fits perfect into the drain plug and fill plug on both the tranny and the rear diff. I just tested all 4. I assume the funny inverted star tool would be for the automatic or some other audi/vw's. So, the only tool needed is a torx 55! as far as not using mobil 1 in the tranny, this is where i saw that:

Im not sure if it is correct or not, but i think i'll probably get the motul to be safe unless someone knows better...?

I got all my tools fairly cheap... cam lock bar normally $160-$360 I got it for $80 ooh ooh also with the crack lock too, cam bar is massively beefy. Cam tensioner compressor tool, normally $40, i got it for $18, got my lock carrier support bolts, normally $40-$60 I got mine for $26, actually I got two pairs, company decided to send me another pair... for fun I guess.

Everything else, I usually already have. There's a few other tools I'll invest in like bearing race puller and maybe a few seal pullers/installers specifically for Audi. The tools that are in the service manual is what I'm looking to add to the arsenal. Almost finished with that, not many to go now.

Search the net guys, it's not that hard to find the tools online. Find the better deal, and don't get ripped off. No need to rent tools, in risk of having them break and then your out 300 some dollars... nah... not worth it.

Get your own and don't sweat it. Then again I'm a DIY type of guy, I do everything myself, and it comes outs 100% better than a dealer service tech guaranteed!
