More Opinions...lol
Kevin, regarding the transmission, look it up here on the forum. It is a rather arduous process as you have to pump the fluid out and refill. It takes a while and the fluid is expensive (not available at Pep Boys...LOL); hence my comment that if the transmission shifts properly (no lagging or clunking), then leave it for now, it is not essential. I had an Audi Specialist (who I would not recommend) once tell me that "it's a lifetime fluid", however when I decided to do it on my A6 Avant (7 years old, 100K miles at the time), it was absolutely necessary and now with 165K it still shifts like new, better then when I bought the car. Good PM, especially on the S4 as it has likely been thrashed a bit.
Reggie is right regarding the timing belt; don't mess with it; if you pop it, there goes your investment... do the whole kit, not just the belt. IT is really cheap insurance and you don't want the water pump going in 20K and then have to open it up again, remember, the water pump is driven by the timing belt, hence the PM. Look at the technical briefs on this site; they are very informative and outline the timing belt replacement in excellent detail.
Good luck Kevin; we are all pulling for you, the B5 S4 is a truly awesome ride.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.
My intention has always been to do the whole timing belt kit together - including belt, tensioners, water pump, etc. My goal is to have it done by this summer at the latest!

You can get a full timing belt/wp kit for around $400. Right now VAST has a sale on the kit for $325 plus valve cover gaskets.

Go to JHMotorsports and pick up the DIY Timing Belt/WP DVD and you can do it yourself.
Same for the fuel filter, air filter, coolant expansion tank.
Here's a DIY on the upper control arms.

If you search around for the DIY's and want to tackle the projects yourself you should be able to find steps for doing most of the work you have ahead of you.
