In case anyone is interested in the S3, the car is tested by AUTOCAR magazine in their August 11, 1999 issue in a field of 14 hot European hatchbacks. The field includes the VW GTI 1.8T, an alfa, three Peugots, a Rover, and other European and Japanese competitors. The S3 finished in the top 4, but the winner was The Peugot 306 Ralleye. There is quite a spread in price, with S3 being by far the most expensive car (probably why it didn't win). Here are some S3 stats:

Price: 27,150 Pounds
Engine: 210 hp@5800 rpm, 199 lb-ft @2100-5000 rpm
0-30 mph: 1.9 sec
0-60 mph: 6.4 sec
0-100 mph: 16.4 sec
Max speed: 145 mph
