Default S4 projected price; ~M3?

I apologize for not checking the archives, but the prospect of an S4 overrules normal courtesy.
After nearly 15 yrs of driving 2 seaters (MR-2 and 300ZX), I became tired with the lack of versatility and the poor weather driving characteristics and purchased a 98 A4 2.8 Quattro. It has all the engineering refinement I could want (Excepting the superlight steering and the placement of some controls). Even with the "Sport Package" the handling is not what I want.
BTW IMO the TT is great, if I were looking for a 2 seater, I would have trouble waiting for the higher performance models to become available.
sorry for rambling
Frank

Default Its in the archives....but MSRP - Base Price is $37.9K

Therefore, it is considerably less than an M3 similarly equipped. The S4 "seems" to be more in line with E46 328i pricing. However, you can get some money off on 328i cars, and you can't really do that with S4s.

Default First, we need an M3 that is "similarly equipped" (more)

alarm/keyless entry, wood trim, all-wheel drive, tilt/telescope wheel, xenons, six airbags, clear sunroof, six-speed, etc.

The S4 is a bargain--E46 328s actually cost more with similar options, I priced one. They're definitely quicker than I thought they'd be, though.

The S4 that I'm getting has the following:

* Convenience Package (sunroof, home-link, etc)

* Cold weather package (heated seats, etc)

* Bose Audio + CD changer (dealer said they were breaking these two up for 2000, don't know if that's true or what)

* Silver seat inserts (don't know if this is a for-pay option or not).

I think the total came to $41,3xx or so. This is pretty much fully-loaded. I can get the dealership to fax me a price breakdown (to post here) of it if you're really interested.

All in all, I'd have to say that this package kicks the crap out of any kind of M3 deal that you can get, and (IMHO) Quattro is worth it's weight in gold and cannot be matched by anything that BMW has to throw at it. The S4's standard fixtures are way, way above the competition, and with the few options that are available it's just unbeatable. Add to that the possibility of getting ~320 to 340 hp out of the engine with a simple ECU mod, and it's really unbeatable.

Default Nate...you are not gonna get 340 bhp out of a US spec S4

Starting with 250 bhp...you should be able to get 300-305 bhp though. You gotta do more to get 320 - 340 bhp. That is getting close to RS4 territory.

Default I staned corrected...

I had heard somewhere (apparently bogus) that you could get 340hp with a chip -- I think it was off the TAP site, and it was for a Euro S4.

In any case, the rest of my argument stands. THe S4 is a great car, and for the money, you get much, much more than you get with an M3.

So, even if you can only get up to 300 or 305hp with a chip, that isn't so bad ;-) Especially since the torque is so high at such low RPM.
