Default S4 Purchase Advice Please!

Hello Everyone!

I'm in the market for a new car with some juice. I became infected with the turbo bug with a mk4 GTi that a family friend had tricked out pretty nicely. It was a BLAST to drive but it practically lived with the CEL on. I changed the oil religiously and maintained it consistently but it had a new problem every 5 minutes. Seemed like everything under the hood was made of plastic and would just dry rot and go. I'm looking for a new car and I found an S4 near me that looks like it could be a lot of fun (even if it's an auto) but I'm terrified of having another car that will run me $2000-4000/yr for maintenance because putting plastic in a hot compartment is apparently a smart idea.

Could someone with experience shed some light on what I could expect maintenance wise from a heavily modded/upgraded 2001.5 S4?

Here is a list of the mods:

123,000 mi on the odo

New turbos $2000
New intercoolers $1250
New motor and snub mounts $325
New injectors and fuel pump $900
New GIAC Tune $1200
New diverter valves $190
New mass air flow housing and adapter $300
New Kenwood double din stereo with new speakers $900
2 New 12inch Memphis subs with Kenwood amp $750
New wheels and tires 18x8.5 $1400
New D2 Racing coilovers $1500
New water pump and timing belt $1200
New valve cover gasket $400
New downpipes and exhaust $1100
New headlights and smoked taillights $350
RS4 front and rear bumpers $750
Tinted windows 15% all around $120
Custom Paint and body work $3500

He's asking $10,500 for the setup, which is also scary seeing as KBB reccomends $5000~, and even taking the mods into consideration it seems high.

Could someone shed some light for me? <3

Entertaining a 2003 WRX as well, for what it's worth.

Hello!

I'll take a stab...

Could someone with experience shed some light on what I could expect maintenance wise from a heavily modded/upgraded 2001.5 S4?
I don't think anyone could give you an accurate answer because it depends on many factors including the quality of the installation of mods and how hard the car was driven (like if it was tracked or just plain abused).

He's asking $10,500 for the setup, which is also scary seeing as KBB reccomends $5000~, and even taking the mods into consideration it seems high.
First I wouldn't pay too much attention to the KBB price. I think that is the case for relatively "rare" vehicles like an S4 or Avant. I recently traded-in a 2006 A4 Avant and let's just say the dealership re-sold it for significantly more than the KBB list price. I got a decent trade-in price according to KBB but in hindsight I probably could have gotten more.

Second, to get a good feel for the market I would check the classifieds in the various forums as well as autotrader, carsoup, etc. to see what cars are listed and selling for (you probably already did some research since you are looking to buy a used S4). This is what I did to see how much the Avant would go for as well as my B5 S4 (that I decided to keep for at least a few more years). Unfortunately there wasn't much data on the Avant and I probably lost out on a couple grand

Hope this helps!

Default My 2 cents

A little addition to what "S4int" said. @eyeswideshut242, since you are in the market and want a decent daily fun ride - why not go and test drive the car with seller and go from there... Every (modded) S4 will drive different.

Good luck
