Default Two questions re B5 S4 one on coolant and 2nd on chipping

Hi

I have a 2001.5 B5 S4 and had two q's.

1. Last week when I started the car the coolant low/coolant temp high came on, I did not have any G12 on hand so added some distilled water and it seemed to work ok.

Q. Is this an ok long term solution, or should I flush and fill with G12? Also I know a few years aback could not mix G12 and Prestone etc but not sure if thats still the case.

2. My car is an auto transmission and thinking about chipping it (have 90k miles and I bought it a year back) however want to know

A. What is best chip and

B. Will chipping result in faster turbo failure and or lower mpg (esp significantly). My car only gives me about 21mpg or so if it falls too much likely not worth it.

Thanks

Shri

You're probably fine with the coolant, unless you had to add quite a bit of water, and that might throw the mixture off. If you added less than half a gallon I wouldn't worry. If you are in some place that it gets extremely cold you might have it checked.

There isn't a best chip. How you drive will be more significant than having the chip, but any time you operate a part at a higher performance level it is going to undergo greater stresses. Mileage probably won't be affected by the chip, again driving style is going to be more significant.

Don't use regular coolant as a replacement, ever! It's fine to dilute with distilled water unless you're in a very cold (or hot) region.

Does anyone here have a chipped B5 w/ tiptronic?
Or a B5 tiptronic with K04's?

I was told the transmission couldn't handle the extra power of a chip or K04's.
I don't know if this is true or not.

Nevertheless, an acquaintance of mine with an A6 2.7T mit tiptronic decided not to chip his car for that reason.

in the long run chipping didn’t impact my avg MPG. The only difference is you can get SIGNFICANTLY lower mileage if you really drive the car hard. When I first chipped i was testing out the new power and had lower mileage(17-18 mpg avg) for a week or two. Now my regular driving habits have returned as has the MPG.
