Is an upgraded exhaust absolutely imparative when you have a chip?
I've been runing APR 93 oct. for about a year now with no problems. Stock, non-modded (ie. Darintake) airbox. Upgraded to 710 DV's and Samco TBB at the same time. It sounds like the oem exhaust is just really restrictive and hinders turbo spool (dp's really eliminate this I know). Sounds like the engine is straining.
Some have told me that a chip by itself actually leads to more stress on the KO3's, then when paired up with an aftermarket exhaust (Vibrant, Borla, Miltek ect.)
Financially at this point I am trying to justify buying an exhaust? Aside from the audible gains, is there any real reason to go with an upgraded exhaust?

Larger diameter pipe = better, think about blowing through a straw...
blow normal through it and its fine, blow harder (ie. chip) you strain and get weird stuff and its harder to blow. Now increase that straw to a toilet paper roll cardboard and its much easier!
Same issue with the S4. After market exhaust=toilet paper roll cardboard. Stock = straw, when chipped.

i just installed a uuc vm3 exhaust and ihave to admit it lets the engine breathe so much better.
sound is great. flow is better. no races to back it up yet but i do hear the police siren ever since i chipped it.

I've been fine with my chip and stock exhaust for over 4 years now.
I don't think you'll really notice any gains from just exhaust. Exhaust + DPs is a differrent story. I told myself I would never buy an exhaust unless it was full turbo back. But that will run you around $2500-$3000 so it's easy to not justify the price at that point.

Unless you're doing it yourself - gutted OEM DPs are $200-$350.
I'm talking the majority of the tuners out there charge $1500 for DPs and $1000 for exhaust. Of course there are cheaper and more expansive combos too.
