Is an upgraded exhaust absolutely imparative when you have a chip?

If it were only that easy.
My car is in Tokyo these days. I only want to do this one more time, and from all I have heard, the Milltek 3" is still the quietest. It's too much hassle to ship these things and put them on/off. At least I can use APO mail.
