Default VW Avus wheels? Huh?!?!?!

Can anyone can explain why the 15" five spoke wheels available on the Golf/GTI are called "Avus"? I think that there was an "Avus blue" available on the M3's (pointless statement...). The Avus wheels on the S cars were patterened after the Avus show car, correct? So, by VW using the name "Avus" for one of their wheels, it sees to cheapen the name in respect to the Audis, considering VW and Audi are one in the same. There is an old race track in Germany called Avus. So, in that case, any "race-worthy" car-oriented item could be named "Avus". Hell, there could be a steering wheel or shift **** named "Avus" for that matter. However, since Audi has been using the name, I don't think that VW should have used it in a different context. So, I suppose I answered any of my own questions, but the name of the VW wheels just doesn't sit well with me....
