I can't say I looked closely at my wheels to see if there are metal valve stems, but I'm almost certain it's indirect, same as previous years. I didn't come across anywhere in the MMI to get tire pressure so that would lend weight to the same.

When you look for wheels on tirerack, it says that our model relies on wheel speed sensors for TPMS work.
A lower wheel will have a different circumference and have a different rotation speed (or at lease that's how my brain thinks about it). Seems like a coarse method, but who cares. For those of us in need of a winter set up it's cheaper.

Far as I know the only current production Audi in the US that has TPMS sensors is the RS7 and the R8. Everything else is ABS sensor based, IE you will not know your tire pressure/ tire temp from the MMI screen. (not counting the TT as its currently transitioning to the 3rd gen)
