Can somebody explain what "Auto" means and how the car determines if the setting is in auto what it should do when? The manual didn't explain this very well. If the system is in auto, does it do comfort and then dynamic when you put the car into sport mode, or does the car just auto sense and adjust?

Auto is kind of a balanced mode. What specifically it does depends on the individual component. For example the steering is light when parking, but tightens up at highway speeds, much more than comfort mode does and dynamic is tight even at parking lot speeds. It's basically just different maps for the various components that are more suitable for daily driving with changing conditions. Manually putting the transmission into sport mode overrides the engine/transmission's drive select mode. If you put the transmission in S, then it puts the engine and the transmission in dynamic, but everything else such as steering etc. stays in the current drive select mode. If the transmission is in D, then the engine/transmission are in Comfort/Auto mode. It's just a way to control the powertrain w/o having to change the entire drive select mode. Similar to going into your individual settings and changing engine/transmission to dynamic. S and dynamic are the same as far as the engine/transmission is concerned. You can observe that if you put drive select in dynamic, the transmission changes to S and if you take it out of dynamic the transmission changes back to D.
